Constitución Avenue in Alcalá de Guadaíra. Seville
This project reflects the complexities involved when working with public spaces as they fulfill a variety of diverse functions. To do this, space which had been taken up by vehicular circulation as this avenue had been the main access road to the city, is recuperated for its residents and their needs.
The objective is to revitalize the space and improve access to it. The asphalted surface is reduced, thus eliminating double-parking and traffic jams, and traffic runs more smoothly with service roads and more parking space and unloading zones.
Fenced-in flower beds are substituted by a tasteful combination of floral vegetation and the avenue’s existing trees, both of which line the pavement. The wide pavements provide both cyclists and pedestrians with ample space. The pavement design includes cobblestone strips which help to visually identify parts which are reserved for urban equipment and installations so as to facilitate their maintenance.
Palm trees are placed along the median strip. Jacarandas and Tipuanas, which ensure a wealth of both colour and shade, are found in pedestrian areas. The combined effect of the design of the pavement and vegetation and the resulting visual clarity all help to provide pedestrians with an enjoyable and luminous view as they walk up and down the avenue.
The result has been a street whose improved design makes it more livable and accesible. Its new layout supplies Alcalá de Guadaira’s residents with more space, better adapted for everyday use and for an enhanced quality of life.
